The Bristol area whose covid rate has doubled in a week

A neighbourhood in south Bristol has seen its covid rate more than double in the space of a week, according to the latest figures from the government.

A total of 13 covid cases were confirmed in Windmill Hill in the seven days to May 29, taking the area's infection rate to 175.3 per 100,000.

In comparison, a week earlier, the area's infection rate was 67.4 after five cases were recorded - meaning the area's rate has more than doubled.

Six areas in Bristol are recording infection rates above 50 - the same figure as a week ago, even if the areas have changed - but all of North Somerset and South Gloucestershire have lower rates.

At the same time, the number of Bristol areas with low covid rates is continuing to slowly decline.

The news comes as Public Health England (PHE) has said there have been 59 cases of the Indian variant recorded in Bristol.

Cases of the variant, now known as Delta, have almost doubled in one week in our city - seven days earlier, 28 covid cases were identified.

The Delta variant of coronavirus - which was first identified in India - is now the dominant strain in the UK, PHE said.

Below are the areas in the region with the highest number of cases in the seven days to May 29, with the number of cases listed and followed by infection rate in brackets:

Bristol

Windmill Hill 13 (175.3)

Knowle West 11 (146)

Lockleaze 9 (118.4)

Knowle 7 (83.2)

Stapleton 5 (75)

Barton Hill 5 (61)

Where is the data coming from?

You can see the latest national data on the government's website.

The map displays weekly data, which are updated everyday.

The data can be viewed by local authority but also by smaller sections called 'Middle Super Output Areas'.

The map highlights which areas of the nation have three or more confirmed cases of the virus and colour co-coordinates the areas by how many cases they have.
