The Brilliant World of Tom Gates by Liz Pichon - review

Liz Pichon, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates

Tom loves Dude 3 - it is his favourite band. One day Tom goes to the corner shop to buy milk and his Granny slips some extra money in his pocket for him to buy something he wants. He spends ages choosing but then Rock Weekly, his favourite magazine, catches his eye. On the front it says "Dude 3 is coming to town". He buys it and in the end he forgets the milk. Obviously he has an excuse – he says they had run out of milk! Tom is good at thinking up excuses.

Amazingly Tom's dad has got tickets to see Dude 3 but the dog eats them. Luckily Uncle Kevin sells them his own tickets. After the concert Tom goes backstage and the whole band high fives him.

For his homework Tom has to write a holiday diary. He writes a diary about his awful two-day camping holiday (it wasn't meant to be that short but things went wrong!) His dad pitched the tent right next to the stream, it rained a lot and the tent blew away! Then he climbed a tree, a branch broke and he slipped to the ground. Then they came home. Surprisingly he got five merits because his teacher liked his story. Tom's never had five merits before.

Tom's teachers say he gets distracted easily. He is very forgetful and is always late for school even though he only lives four minutes' walk away. This is because he always takes ages to choose the right biscuit to eat first or hide his sister Delia's sunglasses!

The book is laid out in cartoon style with lots of drawings. It is Tom's diary and the writing looks like handwriting not print. You can even see the smudgy page where he scribbled something then dripped water on it because he forgot to do his homework and didn't want to get told off! I would rate this book 10 out of 10. If you enjoyed I Am Not A Loser you would probably enjoy this.
