The brilliant Andy Robertson story that shows Liverpool star will never forget his roots

Everyone knows that Andy Robertson is one of the best defenders on the planet right now.

Arguably, he's the best left back and no one comes close at the present time.

It's also a well known rags to riches story as he went from amateur football with Queen's Park to lifting the Champions League trophy with Liverpool.

For many people it would be easy to change and enjoy the fame and fortune that comes with the money you get at that level of professional football.

But it seems to all who know him that Robertson is the same person he was when he was selling match programmes at Hampden to make a living while kicking a ball for Queen's Park in the old Scottish Third Division.

One of his ex-teammates is Ross County forward Michael Gardyne. He played alongside the Scotland captain at Dundee United and is thrilled to see how far he has gone in his career.

Gardyne is a guest on the latest Open Goal podcast alongside Simon Ferry and Kevin Kyle and told a brilliant story about Robertson and how down to earth he is.

It comes after the Champions League Final win when you would expect him to be celebrating his success, but he still made time to send a message back to his old pal.

Gardyne said: "Andy Robertson came in and I actually roomed with him. It was one of those ones, a young boy coming in - put him in with an older lad.

"I was like I’ll take him, and he was brilliant. I was his roommate in Germany and that and he never gives me any bloody praise for that.

"He was brilliant and he just kicked on. Week by week he just got better and better. In training, unbelievable and a great professional.

"He’s the best guy ever. I was in Magaluf and the lads are all like ‘Midge you don’t even ken Andy Robertson’ after the Champions League Final and all that s**** patter.

"So I said ‘I’ll message him the now then’ and I was just thinking ‘please f***ing message back’. Snapchatted him all the boys in Maga, then at quarter past 10 at night he snapchats all the boys back saying ‘cheers mate’ and you know what he said as well? ‘I wouldn’t have got here if it wasn’t for all the lads at United’ and I was thinking ‘you lying b******’”
