The briefing

The briefing: Alexa Chung
Look of the week
You can say what you like about Alexa Chung, but she knows how to dress for an occasion without losing all sense of personal style. This is no mean feat when you are likely to be gifted clothes by labels willy nilly. With Glasto this weekend, the purchase of a Bedale Barbour jacket has never made more sense – the big pockets also mean you don’t need to bother with some great hulking backpack to house all your essentials. Chung naturally has a dinky Chanel cross-body. The black slim slacks and a flat boot are a festival no- brainer, as is the layering of a classic knit over a blouse. Full marks.

Join the queue
Denim shorts have veered towards ridiculous hotpant-like proportions this year, so these above-the-knee-ish dark denim ones feel almost conservative. The keen fashion spotter may have noted that they feature a Vivienne Westwood squiggle print on the turn-up (give yourself 10 points). This is because they hail from the Vivienne Westwood Anglomania + Lee collection, which is due to arrive in stores from 5 July. It’s a unisex collection of jeans that, naturally, reference the grand Dame’s 70s and 80s archive.

Less than a tenner
The sight of grown men trolleying about the streets in plastic flip-flops is one of the Briefing’s all-time pet hates, one likely to induce Twitter ranting in seconds. To be clear: plastic flip-flops are for garden/pool/beach. These espadrilles are obviously designed for similar activities but are also OK for popping out to the local pub/your friend’s house. They come in billions of bright colours, as well as these snappy holiday-like stripes.

Designer on a budget
Isabel Marant is one of those designers of whom fashion types speak with much gusto. Why? Because she makes clothes that are unfussy and often just very, very cool. This autumn her more affordable Etoile line features this quite brilliant knitted jacket. Who wouldn’t want one of those little suckers to be part of their next season look? The collection hits Net-a-porter this week – keep your eyes out for the denim jumpsuit too. In related news, the high-end fashion website is set to launch Mr Porter, the Netaporter for men.

Splurge
Channelling the 1970s seems like an obvious thing to do on holiday, does it not? Cue an Anya Hindmarch straw clutch, dubbed the Recife, complete with a smattering of colourful swish stones. If you deem orange too flashy, the bag also comes in black or purple. Enjoy.
