The Brexit Party wins half the seats in Yorkshire and Humber

The Brexit Party won three of the six seats in the Yorkshire and Humber region, in this year's European elections.

John Longworth, Lucy Harris and Jake Pugh were all elected as MEPs, as their party took 36 per cent of the vote (470,351 votes) in the region.

The party, founded by Nigel Farage in November, also took the largest share of the vote (29 per cent) in Leeds - a city which narrowly voted to remain in the European Union (EU) referendum.

Labour's Richard Corbett was re-elected but the party lost its other seat in the region while UKIP and the Conservatives lost two seats each.

Former Sheffield mayor Magid Magid won a seat for the Green Party while Liberal Democrat Shaffaq Mohammed was also elected.

The results, which were announced at Leeds Town Hall on May 26, mean the region is now represented by three MEPs who are pro-Remain and three Brexiteers.

It has been a hugely successful night for The Brexit Party across the country. So far, they have topped the polls in every region of England apart from London, winning 28 of the 64 MEP seats.

Mr Farage has told the BBC 'we have topped the poll in a fairly dramatic style' because people have been 'badly let down by two parties who have broken their promises'.

The overall turnout for the Yorkshire and Humber region was 33.52 per cent - down slightly from 33.63 per cent in 2014.

The newly elected MEPs will head to Brussels for the first meeting with the European Parliament on Tuesday, July 2.

The UK had been due to leave the EU on March 29, but when that deadline was missed, it had to participate in the election.
