The Break: UFC 234 fallout with Whittaker’s collapsed bowel, Gastelum’s fake belt

Ever have one of those weeks and/or weekends when, by the time you get to Monday, you can barely remember everything that happened? That’s more or less every week in the world of combat sports, where the realm of the bizarrely newsworthy is pretty much where we live.

Which is why MMAjunkie columnist Ben Fowlkes brings you “The Break” to make sense of what just happened, presented in the time it takes to grab a refill of coffee before the boss notices you’re missing.

This week, it’s a deep dive into the middleweight madness around UFC 234. The main event was lost between Robert Whittaker (20-4 MMA, 11-2 UFC) and Kelvin Gastelum (16-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) on just hours’ notice, forcing the champion into “emergency surgery” and prompting Gastelum to bring a belt of his own to the arena and declare himself the “champ.”

And then there was the actual fights that happened, where Anderson Silva (34-8 MMA, 17-5 UFC) put on a more valiant effort than expected in a loss to Israel Adesanya (16-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in the UFC 234 main event.

Check out the video above.

We’d like to say the news won’t always be like this, but come on, who are we kidding?
