The Boy at the Top of the Mountain by John Boyne - review

This is another beautiful, touching and fascinating read by the author who wrote The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. I read The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas a few years ago, and it was one book which I really cherished.

John Boyne is a truly amazing author. Having heard he had written another book about a boy on the other side during the second world war, I was extremely excited. The Boy At The Top Of The Mountain is an absolutely brilliant book.

Pierrot is half German, half French. He’s an ordinary little boy, and his best friend is a Jewish boy called Anshel. When Pierrot meets his aunt for the first time, his life changes. No longer will he be called Pierrot, he will be called Pieter. He has his hair cut in the German style, and being bought German clothes and shoes. He is not allowed to speak about Anshel, and he doesn’t understand why everything is changing.

The storyline is intricately woven and brilliantly written. I was captivated and couldn’t put the book down! It is emotional, it is clever, and is full of plot twists that will snatch your breath away. It honestly is a brilliant book and it is the perfect length as it has a complex story but it doesn’t go on for too long. It isn’t too short either!

I would definitely recommend this to fans of John Boyne, perhaps from 13 years old and upwards. If you are a fan of historical fiction like me, then this is the perfect book for you. John Boyne’s writing style is just brilliant because you feel like you are actually watching the story unfold in front of your eyes and you get really caught up in it. I will definitely be recommending this book to all of my friends!
