'The boss' - Fans react as Joey Barton brings four new signings into Bristol Rovers

Joey Barton has four through the door and Bristol Rovers fans can expect many more as a new-look Gas side takes shape under the watch of the former Manchester City and Newcastle United midfielder.

Wednesday's arrival of Paul Coutts, Sam Finley, Mark Hughes and Nick Anderton wasn't quite box office in the obvious sense but was never really about that anyway, it was setting the tone for what's likely to follow for Rovers this summer.

A key issue within the squad of a lack of leadership has clearly been identified, and these first four moves are an obvious ploy to try and remedy it.

In his new quartet of players, Barton has added experience, lower league nous, captaincy in several areas of the pitch but also quality. There's no coincidence as well, that all are either from or have spent their careers in the north.

Barton clearly feels the club needs that sense of attitude with the age-old criticism of Bristol clubs that they can be too nice; the Rovers boss is trying to change that image.

As far as a the general fan reaction, it's heightened the sense of optimism around the club, albeit with the new League Two season still several months away, by building a platform for others to follow.

The Gas urgently need goalscoring pedigree and that will be when the real excitement comes to the boil but, for now, it was a feeling of a job well done - and Barton had promises 3-4 signings within a few weeks of the season finishing.

The response on social media was one of positivity with particular focus on Coutts, as his arrival was also celebrated by fans of Sheffield United with the Scot a cult hero at Bramall Lane for his performances leading up to their Premier League promotion.

As Barton admitted: “The four of them are certainly a foundation for a nucleus of a new team, alongside the existing players, as we start to build a platform to help us get promoted next season.

“We’ve got further recruitment to do, but to add the level of leadership and the level of experience, with lads already having the experience of playing together – it’s not entirely putting a new team together, it’s people that know each other."
