Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is facing a spell on the sidelines.
The England captain, who is deputising as Spurs skipper in the absence of Hugo Lloris, limped off in the second half against Southampton on New Year's Day.
Kane actually injured himself after putting the ball in the back of the net, although his effort was ruled out for offside as the Lilywhites slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at St Mary's.
That loss has been compounded by the news that Kane has suffered a tear to his left hamstring.
A statement posted on the club's official website reads: "Following assessment today (Friday), we can confirm that Harry Kane suffered a tear in his left hamstring during our New Year's Day fixture against Southampton.
"Our medical staff will continue to review the injury with treatment ongoing."
It remains to be seen how long Kane is out for, but his absence does leave the north London outfit short of options in attack with Troy Parrott and Son Heung-min - once he is back from suspension - familiar with playing through the middle.
Another solution is to dip into the transfer market.
According to @TransferPodcast, Spurs have accelerated their interest in signing Borussia Dortmund striker Paco Alcacer on loan until the end of the season following Kane's hamstring injury.
Despite talk of being busy in the transfer window, Jose Mourinho hinted at that not being the case.
"We have what we have," he said during his pre-Middlesbrough press conference on Friday afternoon. "That's the squad that started pre-season, that’s the squad we have for the season.
"Again everybody knows the importance of Harry in the squad. I think irreplaceable, if you think about one player by one player, I think he’s irreplaceable. But we have to try solutions with the players we have.
"Of course the market is open until the end of January. Everybody in the club wants to give the teams the best conditions but at the same time the world doesn’t end at the end of this season.
"We have a few months until the end of the season to fight for results obviously but nothing ends at the end of the season.
"The end of the season is just the end of the first period."
