The bookies' odds on the candidates to succeed John Bercow as House of Commons Speaker

The race to become the next Speaker of the House of Commons has officially begun.

John Bercow announced on Monday he will quit as Speaker and MP on October 31.

He said he owed it to his family, and in an emotional speech, said the role had been the "greatest privilege and honour of his professional life".

But who is in the running to replace him?

Current deputy speaker Lindsay Hoyle and longest serving female MP Harriet Harman are the two leading candidates.

Bookmaker Paddy Power has Mr Hoyle at evens, while Ms Harman is the 11/4 second favourite.

Conservative MP Eleanor Laing is at odds of 5/1 and Labour's Rosie Winterton at 10/1.

Rhondda MP Chris Bryant, who has today said he will also run for election, also has odds of 10/1.

William Hill also Mr Hoyle and Ms Harman as favourites with 4/5 and 11/4 respectively. Again Ms Laing and Mr Bryant have odds of 10/1.

Mr Hoyle, Labour MP for Chorley, tweeted after Mr Bercow's announcement: "Now that there is a vacancy for the Office of Speaker of the House of Commons, I am happy to confirm that I will be standing as a candidate.

Lindsay Hoyle, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons (PA)

"I would like to thank Mr Speaker for his dedication and service to our country. He has made many reforms. He is a champion of LGBT and BAME rights and we now have a more diverse and representative House than ever before. However, there is much more work to be done.

"As Members of Parliament we are clearly in unprecedented times and it will be vital to have an experienced Speaker who can provide the stability and leadership the House of Commons requires in order to remain at the centre to our political system.

"As Deputy Speaker I believe that I have proven myself to be independent and fair. I have ensured all Members of Parliament have been able to exercise their right to speak on behalf of constituents to hold the government to account - regardless of position or length of service."

Harriet Harman, MP for Camberwell and Peckham, is known as the "Mother of the House" as she is the longest continuously-serving female MP.

She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "This is a Parliament in very difficult times. We have got very divided times in the country and Parliament itself is divided.

"I think what Parliament has to do, and the Speaker has to do, is to ensure that Parliament can have its say.

"I would be a champion for Parliament.

"I think the relationship between Parliament and public is very difficult at the moment, and I think a really confident, positive voice speaking about the importance of Parliament with the public is necessary at this time."

What will John Bercow do next?

Online bookmaker Betway is offering odds of 5/2 that he will take part in ITV hit show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

The betting firm thinks his most likely next step is to stand as an Independent MP at evens, while he is 9/2 to take on the role as Have I Got News For You host.
