A Book of Mormon movie remains a goal for creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the duo have revealed.
Parker and Stone, who are also behind South Park, told IGN they had been inspired to consider revamping the megahit play for the big screen by the various versions around the world. Since launching on Broadway in 2011, the production has spread to London’s West End and Melbourne, Australia, where it will launch in January 2017.
“It’s something we want to do,” Stone said. “We don’t have any specific plans but yeah, we’d love to do it at some point.”
Added Parker: “It’s going on in three different places in three hours and, like, now there’s a bunch of people in it that we’ve never met before.
“Just being able to kind of get a definitive version back together sounds like a good thing. Everything about it sounds fun, we just haven’t really talked about it that much yet.”
The Book of Mormon is the story of two naive American Mormons who go to Uganda in an attempt to convert the natives. The original Broadway production won nine Tony awards, including best musical, when it premiered in 2011, and an accompanying album won a Grammy. The London show won four Olivier awards after debuting two years ago.
Parker and Stone have made forays into film before. An extended take on their television show, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, debuted in 1999, and their 2004 satire Team America: World Police used puppets to ridicule North Korea’s ruling dynasty long before the furore surrounding Seth Rogen and James Franco’s The Interview.
