The bone-chilling temperatures recorded in parts of Edinburgh and Lothians this morning

Those in parts of Edinburgh and the Lothians have been experiencing a freezing cold morning with temperatures not far off -4C.

Those up and about early on would likely have felt the force of some harsh, bone-chilling conditions.

Police even took to social media to urge people to take care on the roads, tweeting: "It's another cold morning across Scotland with gritters having been out throughout the night. Please take care when driving this morning and make sure your car is fully defrosted before setting off on your journey."

According to the Met Office things were -3C as people were making their way to work shortly before 9am.

And the team at Amey Trunk Roads reported just how cold things were on a number of the busiest routes in and around the capital.

At 7.10am the M8 at junction 4 Whitburn was -3.7C while the A702 at Biggar was -3.1C. Temperatures of -2.9C were recorded at the A702 Nine Mile Burn at 7.20am and -2.7 was recorded at the A702 West Linton.

Traffic Scotland also issued 'low temperature' alerts for Lothian and Borders along with Central, Tayside and Fife.
