The bold EFL plan that could see Leeds United lose more than half their matchday revenue

Leeds United could play just 11 home games next season under bold plans to split the EFL into regional divisions.

The Sun on Sunday is reporting that EFL chiefs are considering plans to split up all three divisions - the Championship, League One and League Two - by region.

The leagues would run on a north-south basis and the proposal is just one suggestion for when football eventually resumes after the coronavirus fallout.

The report states: "A league revamp would involve the 12 teams in each sub-division clashing home and away before coming together for play-offs to decide promotion and perhaps relegation.

"This would, in theory, reduce the risk of the competition having to shut down in the wake of new Covid-19 outbreaks.

"It would also cut travel and accommodation costs."

One potential drawback is of course that teams would see the number of home games played effectively halved, from 23 at present down to just 11 - this would obviously result in lost matchday revenue for clubs.

From 1921 to 1958, the third tier of English football was regionalised into North and South divisions.

For Leeds United, they will be hoping that they can finish the job they started this season and render all talk of the Championship obsolete.

Marcelo Bielsa's side are top of the table with nine games remaining when all matches were suspended in early March.

These are the 11 sides Leeds would face in a revamped Championship North division (Based on this season's teams):

Barnsley

Blackburn Rovers

Derby County

Huddersfield

Hull City

Middlesbrough

Nottingham Forest

Preston North End

Sheffield Wednesday

Stoke City

Wigan Athletic
