The Bohicas: The Making Of review – not-quite-blockbusting indie-rock

Not every band find themselves the subject of a film before their debut album has arrived. With the June release of a tour documentary made by the people behind Blur’s No Distance Left to Run and LCD Soundsystem’s Shut Up and Play the Hits, you’d expect the Bohicas to be fairly remarkable. Set that assumption aside for a second. The Essex four-piece’s blend of riff-heavy, bluesy indie and garage-rock recalls the Dandy Warhols’ spark, but is hardly revolutionary. There’s shimmying to be done to Only You, with its 90s Britpop touches and layered vocals. Elsewhere, XXX offers up the sort of lightly smouldering fare that conjures up images of sweaty underground bar gigs and photogenic people thrashing about in leather jackets. Frontman Dominic McGuinness’s reedy voice sounds weaker than this music deserves, but that doesn’t stop the rest of the band from thrusting their way through a swaggering set of songs about love, lust and getting the girl.
