The Bodyguard's Melody Thornton speaks out on Instagram after show halted and riot police called

Melody Thornton has spoken out after a performance of hit musical The Bodyguard was stopped before the end due to members of the audience refusing to stop singing over the cast.

The show, based on the classic film of the same name, has been touring the country again, after making its debut in the West End nearly a decade ago. And this time its Pussycat Doll star Melody who is taking on the role first made famous by the late and great Whitney Houston, with her wowing audiences in Sunderland in February.

Melody is following in the footsteps of Beverley Knight and Alexandra Burke by playing diva Rachel Marron, the pop megastar under threat from an obsessed stalker. The show's soundtrack is full of Whitney classics, including So Emotional, I'm Every Woman, I Have Nothing and, of course, I will Always Love You.

And, it was during her performance of the latter, around 10 minutes before the scheduled end of Friday's performance that trouble started at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, as having already been warned not to sing loudly, some audience members ignored the orders and spoilt the song for Melody and the many others inside the venue.

People in the theatre have been on Twitter to say that those told to be quiet became aggressive towards theatre staff and that's why the show was brought an abrupt halt police were called, with photos then being posted online of police cars outside the theatre as people who'd been inside were left wondering just what had gone on. Police then confirmed that two people had been "removed by security staff were spoken to by police."

The show's leading lady Melody has taken to Instagram to address the situation. In the immdiate aftermath of the show, she took to her story and said: "I respect that you paid your money and I am so grateful to everyone who respects the people on stage who want to give you a beautiful show. For everything that happened tonight, I don’t have all of the details, I just am very, very sorry that we couldn’t finish the show. I fought really hard. It feels awful, and I just hope that we see you again.

She added: “The Bodyguard is a great show. It’s a wonderful story and love story. And I know people were out to see just a really beautiful show. I thank everyone who was respectful of the performers, and I’m very sorry for those who weren’t. I hope that we see you soon. That’s it. Thank you love you.”

The Bodyguard is back in Newcastle in August, with the North East's own Zoe Birkett playing the lead.
