“The Bodyguard” will get another chance at taking control of moviegoers’ hearts.
A “reimagining” of the 1992 romantic drama starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner is currently underway from Warner Bros.
Tony Award nominee Matthew López has been tapped to script the film, which will be “inspired” by the original, according to Variety.
The acclaimed playwright is the creative force behind the epic 2019 Broadway play “The Inheritance” – a contemporary exploration of gay history loosely inspired by E.M. Forster’s classic novel “Howard’s End.”
“The Bodyguard” grossed more than $400 worldwide and its soundtrack, featuring “I Will Always Love You,” is considered the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time – amassing more than 45 million copies worldwide.
The reboot is being produced by, among others, Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote and produced the original film. The 72-year-old filmmaker previously wrote and directed “Body Heat,” “The Big Chill” and “The Accidental Tourist.”
The project reportedly has been in the works since 2011, and the actors whose names have been floated to star in it include Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, and Channing Tatum and Cardi B. Fans of Lizzo and Chris Evans have even expressed on social media how they would like to see the odd pair in the revival.
Diana Ross and Steve McQueen were initially attached to star in an early mid-1970s version of “The Bodyguard,” which never materialized.
