The body of a woman has been found in a stream in Salford

A woman's body has been discovered in a stream in Salford .

Police were called to Merlin Road in Irlam on Sunday afternoon to reports a body had been found in nearby water.

The scene, which is close to Irlam Football Club and runs alongside the M62, has been cordoned off while investigation work is carried out.

Forensics officers have also been drafted in.

The circumstances surrounding the woman's death are currently unclear.

Further details including her age or identity have also not yet been released.

Officers are now urging anyone with information to contact police.

A spokesman for GMP said: "At around 2.15pm on Sunday, police officers sadly discovered a body of a woman in the stream near to Merlin Road in Salford.

"A scene remains in place while forensic work is carried out and enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with any information should contact police on 101 quoting incident number 1198 of April 14.

Reports can also be made anonymously by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
