The bodies of two men have been found by police at flats in Newton Heath

Police are investigating the discovery of the bodies of two men at flats in north Manchester.

Officers were called to Hopgarth Walk in Newton Heath on Tuesday afternoon following a report of concern for welfare.

The bodies of two men, aged in their 50s, were found.

The area, close to Deal Close and Droylsden Road, was cordoned off by police.

A fire engine and three police vans were scrambled to the scene as an investigation into the double tragedy was launched.

Scene of crime officers were also sent to find evidence to explain the deaths.

Plain clothes detectives and forensic officers in white suits could be seen going in and out of the property.

A pathologist is due to conduct post mortem examinations to establish the causes of death.

Neighbours expressed shock and confusion about what had happened.

One told the M.E.N. there were two men who lived in one of the flats who hadn’t been seen for several weeks.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers were called to Hopgarth Walk following a report of 'concern for the welfare of a man'.

"Officers attended and sadly discovered the bodies of two men who are believed to be in their 50s," it went on

The statement continued: "Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding their deaths remain ongoing and a Home Office Post Mortem examination will take place over the coming days.

"The scene will remain in place while officers carry out their enquiries."
