The BMW iX3 Prototype Blew Us Away

  • InsideEVs contributor Tim Stevens drove the upcoming BMW iX3 recently.
  • He came away impressed by the pre-production prototype's handling, tech and charging speeds.
  • The iX3 goes into production later this year as BMW's first "Neue Klasse" EV.

BMW has been hyping up its next-generation "Neue Klasse" electric models for years now. It pitches the cars as a paradigm shift for its electric efforts—vehicles that will serve up far faster charging, far more range and way more powerful technology all around than EVs like the i5 and iX

And now, we're starting to see how these bold claims match up with reality. InsideEVs contributor and veteran automotive journalist Tim Stevens got to drive a near-production prototype of the upcoming BMW iX3 crossover in France, and he came away impressed.

Check out the video above to see what Tim thought about the iX3's on-road performance, technology, charging times, panoramic display and more. And, if you desire a deeper dive, be sure to check out his full review

One thing that stuck out to me: Tim was particularly blown away by how the iX3 brakes, likening its smoothness under braking to Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. That's extremely high praise, and it bodes well for BMW's first-ever ground-up EV platform.

BMW plans to unveil the iX3—sans camouflage—this September, before putting it into production by the end of the year. Needless to say, we're eager to sample the real deal ASAP.
