While The Block typically follows the same format year after year — five teams competing against one another to renovate the best house — the new season has introduced a major twist that’s completely changed the dynamic amongst the cast.
Rather than sleeping on-site like earlier seasons or staying in caravans nearby like last year’s cast, the 2026 contestants are all living together in one house for the first time ever.
The twist basically merges the renovation series with Big Brother (although they can’t say this on-air as the shows are on different networks) and sees the 10 contestants from different walks of life get closer than ever before as they share bathrooms and living spaces.
Gold Coast-based couple Chantel and Wyatt told PEDESTRIAN.TV at the season’s launch event last month that while living in a share house started “fine”, it became “harder” as the season progressed and rivalries formed.
“When people are in your personal space all the time, there’s a bit of tension naturally,” Chantel said.
Perth-born paramedic Lisa also teased that the shared accommodation caused some “drama” amongst the cast, adding: “If you put 10 adults in a share house together, force them to share a shower, share a washing machine and back them into a corner, you are going to have to fight your way out.”
It seems not everyone got caught up in the drama, however, as South Australian farming couple Adam and Jolene shared that living together only had a positive effect on their relationships with their co-stars and brought them closer together.
“Even though it was a share house, it’s not like we were all sort of congregating all the time. Everyone had their own space, so it wasn’t that bad,” Jolene detailed.

Meanwhile, Brisbane besties Courtney and Sev told P.TV that the living situation forced everyone to “confront [their] issues head on”.
“We had to leave the beef at The Block site and come and be civil in the kitchen. You just had to,” Sev said, while Courtney added, “Or you had to chat it out”.
The new season has only just kicked off, and while it’s been relatively drama-free so far, we’ll have to wait and see how the dynamic changes when their first rooms are judged on Sunday.
