The bizarre title celebrations that could await Leeds United in the Championship

The Championship season might still be up in the air, but we might have a better understanding of how Leeds United’s title celebrations could end up looking.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men of course lead the way in the title race, holding a one-point over West Brom before the season was brought to a halt by the coronavirus outbreak.

Leeds and the rest of the division are still waiting to find out how the rest of the campaign will be decided, with the EFL keen for the Championship to be concluded despite some opposition.

In any case, United fans will be desperate to see their side lift the title and end their 16-year absence from the Premier League.

That is of course a still a matter to be decided, and should the season resume, West Brom will no doubt push Leeds all the way, but it seems likely one of the two sides will be the ones to be crowned champions.

No-one knows at this stage how a trophy ceremony would pan out should Leeds go on to win the title, although we might have got a good indicator from Austria last night – and it’s pretty strange.

On Friday night, RB Salzburg beat Austria Lustenau 5-0 to win the Austrian domestic cup, with no fans in attendance to see their moment of glory.

And rather than the usual jubilant celebrations with the trophy on the pitch, players instead were spread out across the podium, with each member of the squad given a designated spot to stand in in order to maintain social distancing.

The captain then rather tentatively made his way to his spot in the centre with the trophy before lifting it, with his teammates clapping and cheering from a distance.

It’s probably not quite what Leeds fans had in mind for celebrating their long-awaited return to the top flight, and they’ll be hoping a proper celebration can be organised when it’s safe to do so.
