The bizarre request Unai Emery made to referee during Arsenal's clash with Real Madrid

We're used to seeing strange things during pre-season friendlies, but last night's International Champions Cup clash between Arsenal and Real Madrid saw something particularly out of the ordinary.

It took just nine minutes of the friendly for Madrid defender Nacho to receive a red card - something which sparked one of the strangest reactions that you'll see.

Usually the opposition would be rubbing their hands together at the prospect of playing 81 minutes of a game with a numerical advantage, but that wasn't the case for Unai Emery.

The Arsenal head coach had been hoping to use the clash with Real Madrid to hone his sides' tactics, but with the prospect of playing the majority of the match against 10, he decided to ask the referee to rescind Nacho's red card.

Explaining his stance in the post-match press conference, Emery said: "These matches were to take confidence to take rhythm and to play together with young players, to mix, to give them chances.

"The result is not important but also we want to create a winning mentality.

"We are working each match, analysing how to improve defensively and offensively so for example, when we were playing 11 against 11 we were well. After the red card we preferred to play against 11 players and we asked to the referee if we can play against 11 to continue working.

"They didn't give us that support, that chance and when we were playing some moments progressively in 11 against 10 we were not controlling the game like we wanted. And 10 against 10 is the same situation at the beginning.

"We didn't control the match, maybe because we were winning 2-0 but we could to take more of the ball, to keep the ball with possession maybe sometimes we didn't do that but in the transition we were very strong and in the last minutes when we were refreshed the impact of the young players was amazing and also for them, for us, it was perfect."
