The bizarre reason Liverpool defender Andy Robertson needed an operation

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Andy Robertson has undergone surgery - because he was bitten by an insect.

Robertson returned to Melwood for pre-season training on Saturday morning alongside Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gini Wijnaldum and Virgil van Dijk.

However, the left-back was unable to take part in the normal tests and drills having undergone surgery on his right hand to clear up an infection.

Robertson sat out training on Saturday - like the rest of the players who returned at the weekend, there was never any intention of him playing against League Two side Bradford City on Sunday - although he will travel with the squad for the US tour next week.

And Klopp has revealed the strange reason for the 25-year-old having an operation.

“It’s unlucky, he got bitten by something not so good – not a dog, I think it was a spider or a mosquito – and it got infected,” Klopp said to liverpoolfc.com.

“It’s not a massive problem apart from throw-ins!

“He should be back in training in a couple of days. The rest is good, he could do all of the programme he had to do.”
