The birds, the flies and the stinking bins of Troon

Giant stinking bins that should have been moved months ago are spoiling a town’s heart.

The boss of a well-known restaurant is livid - and at times forced to keep his doors shut to keep out the flies.

Johnny Shek says the five communal bins just feet from the front door is also putting off potential buyers of the shut MacIntyres pub next door.

And Johnny, who owns the Jade Dragon in Troon’s Templehill, said: “The bin coral was put in without permission and South Ayrshire Council said they would do something about re-siting them.

“They have not. It’s a haven for flies and seagulls. They obviously don’t care - but the people of Troon do. And so do the tourists. They enjoy The Cross outside with the seats and hanging baskets and they have to come across this.”

Troon Community Councillors are also calling for the coral to be moved somewhere more suitable.

There are two bins for general waste, one for plastic and metals, one for card and paper and another for glass.

On Thursday Johnny said: “They were overflowing again yesterday.

“Even when they are full people are just piling more rubbish in, then the lids are up and the seagulls moved in. I have overheard tourists walking past saying it is disgusting.

“It is hard to believe, but in the evenings people are also urinating up against the bins.”

Johnnie has also told planners and the cleansing departments that the parking bay on the other side of the bins is for taxies - and that cabbies are unable to put down disabled ramps because of them.

He has run the Jade Dragon for a decade, and added: “If it is hot and windy the smell wafts into the restaurant so I cannot keep the door open as I would like. Enough is enough.”

A council spokesman said the bins are expected to be removed next week.

He added: “In Troon we have reviewed the position of the euro bins to find the most suitable location in Templehill and they are due to be relocated week beginning August 12.”
