The Bill to return to screens to ease boredom amid nationwide lockdown

The Bill is gearing up to reappear on our screens in a bid to ease boredom amid the nationwide lockdown.

The ITV show was broadcast over 26 series between 1984 and 2010 following fictional tales of The Metropolitan Police force and introduced iconic characters that went on to rule the TV world.

The hit crime drama is set to return for our binging pleasure on streaming service UK TV Play - who have announced they're now streaming the entire first five series of the soap.

The police drama ran for a whopping 27 years but was axed by ITV after a format change failed to revive the once-triumphant ratings.

The show struggled in the ratings since it was revamped and moved to a later 9pm slot in 2009 when it was also reduced from twice a week to just once.

Having previously managed between five and six million viewers, it slumped to just 3.4million before finally being given the axe.

The Bill - which ran from October 1984 to 2010 - was based in the fictional East London Sun Hill police station with Chris playing DC Mickey Webb, Lisa playing Samantha Nixon, Trudie playing Sgt June Ackland, Graham playing PC Tony Stamp, and Eric playing Sgt Bob Cryer.

The Bill, set in the fictional London area of Sun Hill, initially had just 12 hour-long self-contained episodes but by 1988 the programme was switched to three half-hour shows a week.

A decade later the drama, which created well-loved characters such as June Ackland, Reg Hollis and Jim Carver, returned to 60-minute shows.

The show was rooted in a one-off drama Woodentop in 1983, which so impressed ITV bosses they developed it into a series with the same central characters.

The series was axed back in 2012 after 26 years on ITV.

The show, the nation's longest running police drama, began in 1984 and won it's first Bafta in 2009 for best Continuing Drama.
