The biggest problem Mikel Arteta has to fix as the new Arsenal manager

Mikel Arteta will be expected to hit the ground running at Arsenal.

The former Gunners club captain looks set to take over from Unai Emery as the new head coach at the Emirates, just under three weeks after the Spaniard was given his marching orders.

Freddie Ljungberg has been in interim charge since then, but has only managed to steer the side to one win in his five games at the helm.

Arsenal are 10th in the Premier League table, as close to the relegation zone as they are to the Champions League places and their fortunes are in need of changing dramatically if they are to enjoy any kind of success this season.

James Benge slams Arsenal hierarchy as Gunners lose against Man City

Almost halfway through the season, Arsenal have won just five Premier League games and have conceded a whopping 27 goals - only seven teams have conceded more.

They have allowed more shots on their goal than all but two other sides in the top flight this season - offering up an average of 14.24 shots to opposition teams per game.

Compare that to Manchester City (6.45 shots per game), Chelsea (7.67) and Liverpool (8.4) and you can see where things re really going wrong for the Gunners.

Arteta was one of the fans' firm choices to take over from Emery when football.london ran a poll about who the new man in charge should be.

The former skipper was alongside Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegri in the poll, although it was Rodgers that polled the highest percentage of votes.

It looks set to be Arteta though and those defensive statistics are the biggest issues facing him if he does get the job.

In our poll we also asked: What is Arsenal's biggest problem and how would your pick for head coach fix it?

And more than 80% of the Arsenal fans who responded in our poll mentioned the defence in some way, shape or form.

It may be an easy problem to point to, but it will by no means be an easy fix for Arteta, who will be hoping to have money available in January to make changes, with summer signing William Saliba not due to arrive until next summer.
