The biggest films of 2019 were all franchises or remakes

The British Film Institute has just released the list of the best-performing movies in cinemas within the past year.

Every film in the top ten was either a sequel, part of a franchise, or a reworking of an existing movie.

Although the last Star Wars movie reached fifth place, it made less than the previous instalments in the latest trilogy.

In sixth place was Frozen 2, followed by Captain Marvel, Aladdin, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Jumanji: The Next Level.

It was also a great year for Disney, as seven of the top ten movies of the year were produced by the Mouse.

The first standalone in the list is Rocketman, only reaching 13th position and grossing £23.4million.

The highest independent UK film of the year was Downton Abbey, reaching £28.2million.

In all, 2019 was a good year for UK cinemas, as collectively 176 million visits were recorded in the country - the second-highest total since 1970.
