The big selection posers Rafa Benitez is weighing up ahead of Friday's trip to Leicester City

Rafa Benitez will be pushed into making at least one defensive change for the clash at the King Power Stadium.

Florian Lejeune's knee injury curtailed his season and Benitez has decisions to make at the back.

The midfield area offers a couple of posers too, while his front men misfired against Crystal Palace leaving Benitez with some food for thought as Newcastle look for the win that seals top-flight safety.

Who comes in for Lejeune and will DeAndre Yedlin pay the price for his late penalty clanger against the Eagles?

Whether Benitez decides to change shape and revert to a flat back four remains to be seen, if not Paul Dummett and Federico Fernandez will battle it out for a place in a five-man defensive rearguard alongside Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles.

At right-back Benitez must decide if Yedlin needs a rest after his lack of concentration against Palace.

Javier Manquillo was close to a place in the starting line-up last week after impressing in training but Yedlin offers that injection of pace on the counter attack, something United may need to rely on at Leicester.

Jonjo Shelvey's situation is hard to ignore

Shelvey was only afforded a late cameo against Crystal Palace and has not started a Premier League game since November.

Ki got the nod ahead of him to play alongside Isaac Hayden with Mo Diame out with a muscle strain.

Diame has just a handful of games left to trigger a new contract but some observers are now starting to wonder if he wants to stay here as a one-year extension is deemed insufficient.

Why Kenedy was left out of Newcastle's matchday squad - and what it means for his United future

Given there are big offers on the table from Turkey and Italy, Diame could opt for pastures new.

We still haven't seen Ki and Shelvey get the chance to rekindle their understanding at Swansea but Benitez hinted that the former Liverpool man wasn't fully fit.

Shelvey won't be happy with another place on the bench and the noises from the capital are a move to West Ham is being lined up in the event he calls time on his Toon career due to a lack of opportunities.

Salomon Rondon of Newcastle United (09) during the Premier League match between Watford FC and Newcastle United at Vicarage Road (Newcastle United)

Where's the telepathy gone?

For a few games the combination play between Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez and Miguel Almiron looked untouchable.

But things haven't gelled as well since the international break.

Overseas trips for Rondon and Almiron could be a factor but other talking points have emerged such as a theory that Matt Ritchie wasn't passing to the Paraguay international.

Ritchie rolled a pass to Almiron in the opening stages against Palace almost to make a point but he took a bad touch and it went out for a throw-in.

Miguel Almiron delivers exciting message to Newcastle fans - and vows to repay their faith in him

Almiron recovered to make a couple of runs in that game but he didn't manage a shot on target or provide an accurate cross.

As I've always maintained Almiron needs time to settle down and while a solid pre-season would be ideal, he will have an interrupted summer caused by the Copa America.

Perez hasn't looked himself in the Arsenal and Palace games but memories of his wonder chip at Leicester last season could be a timely reminder for him of what he's capable of.

Yoshinori Muto is eager to start a game and offers something different but his disappointing debut season could continue.
