The big problems Nottingham Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi must solve in crunch clash

It is a big game at the City Ground this weekend, as Nottingham Forest host Bristol City.

With head coach Sabri Lamouchi on thin ice after a start to the season which has seen the Reds without a goal or a point, they desperately need a turnaround in form on Saturday.

Their opponents, by contrast, sit top of the table with three wins from three Championship games.

And it means Lamouchi is facing some crucial selection decisions for his team’s final outing before the international break.

Here’s our take on the key dilemmas for the Frenchman.

Formation

The manager went with a 4-3-3, rather than his favoured 4-2-3-1, at Huddersfield Town last Friday. Different system, but the same end result as Forest fell to defeat.

They had looked better in the first half, although Lyle Taylor - as the focal point of the attack - was still far too isolated.

Some fans have called for a 4-4-2 formation, and Lamouchi has said he would be prepared to play both Taylor and Lewis Grabban up top, once they are at 100 percent fitness.

They’ve had a few minutes in partnership so far, but are yet to both start a game.

It remains to be seen whether that changes this weekend, but either way, the Reds still need to find a way of offering more going forward.

Defence

It was very much a new-look back line against the Terriers, with three of the four-man defence making their debuts.

Centre-back duo Scott McKenna and Loic Mbe Soh showed a lot of promise, though, despite the final scoreline.

It would be worth sticking with them, particularly to avoid making too many changes again.

But there’s always the option of bringing in Michael Dawson if it is felt an experienced head is needed - with Joe Worrall sidelined and Tobias Figueiredo potentially heading for the exit door.

Cyrus Christie is likely to retain his spot at right-back. However, there could be a change on the left.

Tyler Blackett didn’t have the best of games last week, so perhaps Nicholas Ioannou could make his first appearance after becoming the club’s 12th summer addition.

Midfield

Who gets the nod in the centre of the pitch will depend on which formation Lamouchi opts for.

Jack Colback, Samba Sow and Harry Arter lined up last week, but after an encouraging first half, they were unable to provide much by way of support for those ahead of them in a flat second period.

Forest continue to need to pick and choose when they use Sow, given his knee problems, and he was brought off before the hour at the John Smith’s Stadium.

If the manager decides to go with a 4-3-3 again, Ryan Yates could come in, but somehow there needs to be greater dynamism and a willingness to push forward.

Attack

A pretty big decision here - and not just in terms of the system used.

Regardless whether he reverts to his favoured formation or again tries something different, Lamouchi has to make a call on his main striker.

Grabban was given a rest last week, after an indifferent start to the campaign which has seen him miss several golden chances.

Taylor wasn’t afraid of ruffling feathers at Huddersfield, but struggled to make much of an impact as he saw so little of the ball.

Essentially, that’s the big problem Lamouchi must solve - no matter who plays - if his team are to get off the mark.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Samba, Christie, Mbe Soh, McKenna, Ioannou, Colback, Arter, Lolley, Freeman, Ameobi, Grabban.
