The big problem new Chelsea signing Edouard Mendy will have following £22m move

New Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy may have a tougher job on his hands than he realises.

That's according to former Aston Villa and Tottenham striker turned pundit Darren Bent, who has sympathy for Kepa Arrizabalaga because of the Blues' defensive woes.

As much as he thinks the £22million signing Mendy was needed, Bent believes Frank Lampard must address the defensive issues if he wants to see his new goalkeeper, or indeed any keeper at their best in a Chelsea shirt.

"Do you know what, I do like the goalkeeper," he told Sky Sports. "I have seen him but he has a bigger job on his hands than he thinks.

"I think defensively, as a unit, Chelsea haven't been good enough all season.

"They leak goals, I don't think Frank (Lampard) can trust either one of his centre-halves.

"They have made mistakes, we have seen Thiago Silva make a mistake.

"I know Kepa has been poor but if the back four are not in tandem and they are making mistakes, it's not going to be good for anyone."

Chelsea have conceded six goals in their first three league games but they will be looking to improve defensively with new keeper Mendy starting tonight's clash with Spurs in the Carabao Cup.
