The 'Big Power Off': What it is and when it is happening

A "Big Power Off" protest event has been organised in a bid to get the Government to do more to reduce households' energy costs.

The 'switch off' comes as the average family will see its energy bills rise by almost £700. At the same time, national insurance and inflation hikes mean millions of us are really feeling the squeeze.

Bills for electricity, gas, mobile phones, and council tax are also rising at a time when food prices are similarly going up. Interest rates have also risen, putting pressure on those with some types of mortgages.

Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis, who usually has plenty of tips and tricks for people to cut costs, has spoken of his upset and outrage in recent months as even he struggles to find any ways around the staggering rises. The finance guru has begged Chancellor Rishi Sunak and the Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab to do more to help those who are struggling.

Joining him in urging those in power to do more, the Big Power Off event has been arranged for this evening (Sunday, April 10). People are urged to switch all electrical appliances off for ten minutes at 10pm - as long as it is safe to do so and won't put anyone at risk.

Devices are then set to be turned back on at around 10.10pm. Organisers hope the "blackout" will impact on energy prices and shareholder profit, as well as encouraging the government to "take action" to reduce energy costs.

Material circulating online demands immediate action is taken. Further Big Power Off actions are reportedly planned if action is not taken to tackle increased energy bills.
