The big pay-off Martin O'Neill has reportedly received from Nottingham Forest

Sacked Nottingham Forest boss Martin O’Neill reportedly received a £500,000 pay-off from the Reds.

The Northern Irishman was axed from his role at the City Ground on Friday, little more than five months after he had replaced Aitor Karanka at the helm.

When he was appointed in January, O’Neill signed an 18-month contract at the club where he enjoyed great success as a player.

And the Belfast Telegraph claim, with around a year remaining on his deal when he was shown the exit, O’Neill will have picked up a severance package of about half a million pounds.

They say that adds to the “estimated lump sum of £895,000” he picked up when he left the Republic of Ireland job.

O’Neill oversaw a ninth-placed finish in the Championship last season, with Forest eight points adrift of the play-off spots.

The decision to relieve him of his duties came 24 hours before the Reds’ first pre-season friendly of the summer.

He was immediately succeeded by Frenchman Sabri Lamouchi, who watched on from the stands on Saturday as his squad beat Alfreton Town 2-1 at the Impact Arena.

Lamouchi will now get the chance to work with his players and begin preparations for the new campaign, with Forest currently in Spain on a training camp.
