The big Paul Pogba decision facing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United this summer

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has explained what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to do as he looks to get the best out of Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.

Pogba struggled to make an impact as United crashed to a 3-0 defeat against Barcelona on Tuesday night to exit the Champions League at the quarter-finals stage.

The Frenchman has been linked with a possible switch to Spain with Real Madrid but he shown little to impress against Barca on a tough night for United.

Manchester United manager Solskjaer outlines transfer rebuild plans after FC Barcelona defeat

Speaking after the game to BT Sport, Ferdinand spoke about the midfielder's performance and admitted that we need to see more from the World Cup winner at the club.

"I think there’s a big decision in the summer. I think it’s up to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"There’s been things in the media mooted that he might want to leave or he’s fancying a trip abroad but I think you build the team around a player of this calibre.

"Because you’ve seen it once Ole came into the job, his level went up.

Barcelona troll Manchester United with Lionel Messi tweet after Champions League victory

"He’s got 16 goals this season, albeit six of them penalties - but the output in terms of goals has shown a marked improvement since Ole’s come in. So that’s a thing I’m sure he’ll take into account."

"To shift blame on him from a game like today, I think no one’s come out of this with any flying colours.

"It’s going to be over the time that Ole’s been here and Ole will have to judge: ‘Do I build the team around him and the ability that he’s got and the attributes that he has?’ or if Paul wants to leave.

Former Manchester United star reveals four summer transfers needed after FC Barcelona loss

"I would keep him here because Man United, they need stars, they need players who can turn games and he can do that."

Fellow BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves also commented on Pogba's display against Barcelona.

He explained: "Today, he took too many touches. When he plays poorly, he just takes too many touches. When he plays quick and he finds a pass, he’s brilliant. But today he was shifted out on the left-hand side."

United will look to improve their top four chances with a victory over Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
