The big-name managers Everton have turned to in the past as Carlo Ancelotti appointment nears

Everton's search for a new manager appears to be coming to a close.

Carlo Ancelotti is the name that Farhad Moshiri and co appear to have settled on, with Duncan Ferguson set to take charge from the dugout one final time on Saturday when Arsenal - who could be under the stewardship of Mikel Arteta by then - come to Goodison Park.

It emerged earlier in the week that Ancelotti had been approached by the Blues, with the Italian, who was relieved off his duties at Napoli just hours after he took them into the knockout stages of the Champions League, now expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

Ancelotti, though, is far from the first high-profile manager that the Blues have chased.

Over the years, there have been several big names that have interested Everton - and others who were interested themselves.

Stan Cullis

The number one target before Harry Catterick took charge in 1961, Cullis was the Pep Guardiola of his day.

Cullis presided over the most successful period of Wolverhampton Wanderers' history, winning the league title and the FA Cup on more than one occasion, before he left in 1964. He also managed Birmingham City before he retired from working in football.

Don Revie

Prior to taking the job as England's boss in 1974, Revie was in contention to take charge at Goodison Park.

Having turned around the fortunes of Leeds United, Revie's reputation was high, but the Blues turned to Billy Bingham after after Catterick left.

Bobby Robson

When Robson was at Barcelona, an Everton delegation approached him at the Catalan side.

He later said: "Had I been younger I might have been more tempted. Let’s face it, Everton are a magnificent club, every bit as big as neighbours Liverpool and success would elevate it to the stars."

Brian Clough

The legendary manager was desperate for the Goodison Park job, reportedly telling associates that the Blues "bottled it" over a potential appointment.

The ex-Nottingham Forest and Derby County boss won two English league titles, two European Cups and four League Cups among other things during his career.

What could have been had Everton plumped for Clough in 1977.

Andy Gray

The ex-Blues striker was interviewed for the role back in 1998, but instead chose to head to Sky Sports where he had received a better offer.

Gray now works for beIN Sports having been dismissed from that position back in 2011.

Wim van Hanegem

The former Dutch midfielder, who was a finalist at the World Cup in 1974 with his national side, losing 2-1 to West Germany, was also interviewed for the position at the same time as Gray.

He went on to manage in his home country with Sparta Rotterdam and FC Utrecht.

Diego Simeone

When Marco Silva was appointed in June 2018, the fiery Argentinean was said to be interested in the Goodison Park project and was of serious interest to the club back at the time.

Ultimately, he stayed at Atletico Madrid, where he will take on Liverpool in the Champions League last-16 early next year.

Even with that illustrious list, Ancelotti, should he be confirmed as Everton's next manager as anticipated, will become the most high-profile appointment in the club's history.

His first game in charge could be on Boxing Day as the Blues take on Burnley, with trips to Newcastle United and Manchester City to follow that.
