The big midfield decision facing Mauricio Pochettino as Harry Winks shines in new England role

Harry Winks retained his place in the England starting XI on Sunday evening as the Three Lions ended their Euro 2020 qualifiers with a 4-0 win over Kosovo.

Starting in Bulgaria last month as they left Sofia with a convincing 6-0 victory, the Spurs midfielder caught the eye on Thursday as he more than played his part in the drubbing of Montenegro.

Neat and tidy on the ball and always looking to get the team moving forward when in possession, he was handed a different role by Gareth Southgate for the trip to Pristina.

With Mason Mount dropping out of the team after a quiet game in midweek, Declan Rice returned to the side after failing to start in the previous two qualifiers.

As the West Ham man assumed his natural defensive position in midfield, that allowed Winks to play in a slightly more advanced role.

It was a position that suited the 23-year-old down to the ground.

Whenever Winks was on the ball in his 90 minutes on the pitch he looked to get the team upfield and this was evident as he ran forward and played in Raheem Sterling early on in the first half.

The midfielder always looked to get forward at any given opportunity, seen very close to club teammate Harry Kane on occasions, and he got his just rewards in the 32nd minute as he scored his first England goal.

With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in possession outside the box, Winks produced a brilliant run to burst into the area and gave Arijanet Muric the eyes to coolly find the bottom corner after a fine first touch.

It was a finish that Kane would have been proud of and not one reminiscent of a central midfielder who rarely gets forward for his club.

Winks has been a regular in the Spurs team for some time now but you'd find it hard to remember a number of occasions when he's raced into the box.

The Lilywhites' central midfield pairing of Winks and Moussa Sissoko isn't exactly attack-minded and you have to go back to the start of the year for the last time one of the duo scored for the north Londoners, with the time before that in October 2017 as the Frenchman netted against West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

Tanguy Ndombele already has two goals in his first 14 appearances for Spurs and his addition has finally given the team an extra attacking threat to help out Kane and Co as he regularly gets forward and tries to make things happen.

Winks' performance in his new role for England now gives Pochettino food for thought and he may look to give his midfielder more license to get forward over the coming months.

Spurs' coaching staff have been trying to get Winks to push forward and get into the box for some time now and they may well be drilling it into him a bit more over the next few days after his performance in Pristina.

Playing alongside Eric Dier in midfield would give him the licence to get forward a bit more given his teammates' defensive capabilities, yet the 25-year-old's absence from the team this season may mean that Winks has to agree with Ndombele and Sissoko who goes forward and when.

Options are always good for Pochettino, especially at this current time given their shocking start to the season, and Winks could well find himself in a different role for his club going forward after his starring role for his country in their final Euro 2020 qualifier.
