The big Jurgen Klopp calls to help Liverpool cope without Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino against Barcelona

No Mohamed Salah. No Roberto Firmino. But still a chance of another remarkable European comeback.

Jurgen Klopp, his remaining available Reds players and the supporters who will pack into Anfield on Tuesday night will approach the occasion with hope, belief and a little prayer.

Even the most optimistic fan, though, will admit the job of overturning a 3-0 Champions League semi-final deficit against Barcelona will be made rather more difficult with the absence of two of Klopp's celebrated forward line.

Sadio Mane, arguably Liverpool's best performer since the turn of year, remains.

But who partners the Senegalese? And does Klopp take the opportunity to make drastic changes?

The tried and not exactly trusted

The most obvious solution for Klopp would be to bring in both Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge.

The pair have waited patiently for much of the season, relegated to bit-part roles with Salah, Firmino and Mane the main men.

Full extent of Mohamed Salah head injury confirmed as Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gives timescale for return

Sturridge has started the last two Premier League games in Firmino's absence – performing better at Newcastle United than against Huddersfield Town – although he didn't even make the bench at Camp Nou last week.

Origi, meanwhile, was preferred to the Brazilian in Porto but was given the hook at half-time. His confidence, though, will surely be sky high after that late winner on Tyneside at the weekend.

The Shaqiri question

Origi's dramatic header came via a free-kick delivery from the right from Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Switzerland international has barely featured since February having proven effective during the autumn period before Christmas.

Shaqiri will be fresh and would, preferably, slot in on the right of the front three, allowing Mane to shift central and Origi on the left, or keep the Senegalese on the wing with Origi or Sturridge leading the line.

Rewind the clock

Shaqiri shot to prominence when Klopp switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation earlier in the season, operating on the right of the three behind the main striker, who was usually Salah.

Any change in tactic will most likely depend on where best to position Mane, who will now assume the role as lead forward.

A 4-2-3-1 could even see Sturridge in behind Origi, with Mane on the left and Shaqiri on the right, which was how Liverpool finished the game against Newcastle.

Welcome back Ox

Klopp threw a curveball in Camp Nou by handing Joe Gomez a first start in almost five months.

But it would be a real surprise if Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was brought into a three-man midfield in support of a front three.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is fit but was out for much longer than Gomez and has played less football since his return.

A bench role seems more likely. A start, though, would be a huge gamble that would probably last for at most an hour. By then Liverpool will know if their hopes of a comeback are forlorn.

The leftfield right-side change

No defender has created more Premier League goals than Trent Alexander-Arnold this season.

So could the youngster be pushed up on to the right of a 4-2-3-1 with Gomez reprising his right-back role of the first leg?

With Shaqiri in behind Sturridge or Origi and Mane on the left, Liverpool wouldn't be left wanting for creativity and Alexander-Arnold would also provide some defensive solidity.

Rip it up and start again

Whatever happens, Barcelona won't have fully prepared for it. The temptation, then, could be for Klopp to completely throw caution to the wind.

One very realistic option is to go with a three-man backline of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

That frees up Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson as the wing-backs, and still leaves space in midfield for three players while allowing two – Mane and either Origi or Sturridge – up top.

Melwood will certainly have been an interesting place the last few days...
