The Big Freeze - Renfrewshire manages to keep moving with up to six inches of snow

Council grit squads dumped tons of salt on the roads yesterday to keep Renfrewshire moving.

Despite up to six inches of snow on higher ground, all main routes were kept clear.

In downtown Paisley, more than three inches settled as heavy snow showers pelted the area.

Temperatures were forecast to have dipped to -5C early this morning.

And the big freeze is to continue with -6C heading our way early tomorrow.

A snow warning remains in force until midnight tonight, though it will be sunny for much of the day.

Temperatures will only climb above zero degrees centigrade for three hours in the afternoon – and only to 1C.

Heavy snow fell late yesterday afternoon to add to the icy layer on the ground.

The band of snow was NOT forecast to hit the area as predictions put the problem area well north of Glasgow.

The narrow snowbelt missed Greenock and Ayrshire and there was only flurries near Port Glasgow.

Drivers on backroads in the southside of Paisley struggled to get out of driveways during yesterday afternoon’s heavy downfall.

Meanwhile, police reported no problems in Barrhead or Neilston.

East Renfrewshire Council said its road teams were operating 24 hours a day to keep roads and heavy-use pavements clear.

A spokeswoman said: “Our teams have been out since first thing treating priority, secondary and rural routes.

“All priority routes were covered at 4pm and 8pm yesterday evening and again at 12am and 4am this morning.

“Teams continued to patrol the area and treated routes throughout the day.

“Additional teams are gritting pavements and filling grit bins across the area. Driving conditions are difficult due to the snowfall, but all routes remain passable with care.”

In reality, the Alpine-style conditions were more enjoyed than causing a hazard.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “Our gritting teams have been out throughout the current weather warning and will continue to be out clearing snow and gritting our roads to facilitate essential travel in Renfrewshire.

“Their work, alongside all our teams delivering frontline services, is fantastic and we thank them for their dedication to supporting our communities.

“Please stay safe if you need to travel and plan ahead to ensure you are #RenReady to deal with the current weather conditions.”
