The big events to look forward to in Derry for 2022

As the new year begins, it is a good time to gather our thoughts and look forward to the many exciting events we can enjoy in 2022.

Some of these events will see Derry city centre and along the River Foyle transformed through exciting new installations.

Alongside developments being made with the City Deal, 2022 will be an exciting year for Derry.

With the return of many events the city know and love, as well as some new ventures, there is plenty to look forward to this year.

Here is a look at some of the events we can look forward to:

  • Our Place in Space trail

Derry is to host an exciting new 10km art installation as part of a UK-wide creative festival.

The Our Place in Space trail is Northern Ireland's project for the UNBOXED: Creativity festival taking place in the UK in the Spring of this year.

Visitors will walk the 10km interactive trail along the River Foyle and become immersed in seeing our solar system and life on Earth from a totally different and unique perspective.

  • Illuminate festival

The Historic Walled City of Derry will come to life through this new, innovative and immersive experience ‘Illuminate’ which will celebrate the city’s rich history, heritage and culture.

Experience the ‘Story of Derry’ through a trail of light displays, animations, music sessions in intimate venues, culminating in a series of live illumination experiences which will turn iconic buildings into spectacular pieces of art.

The 1.5km route can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace as you make your way through the 400 year old Walled City.

Locations include the 400 year old walls, the original Walled city gates, the iconic Guildhall and St. Columb's Cathedral.

  • Clipper Festival

2022 will see the long-awaited return of the global Clipper Festival, with Derry taking up its role as a host city.

Plans are underway for the July 2022 Clipper stopover and the return of the internationally acclaimed Foyle Maritime Festival, which draws more than 200,000 attendees to the city’s quayside.

Visitors will enjoy the electric atmosphere that surrounds the city during this exciting race.

  • City of Derry Jazz Festival

Music will once again fill the streets of the city this year with the return of the much-loved Jazz Festival.

Originally launched in 2001 by Gerry McColgan, the City of Derry Jazz Festival has become part of the fabric of the people, the culture and the life of Derry ever since.

Inspired by the Cork Jazz Festival, Gerry and his colleague Johnny Murray wanted to combine the city’s rich musical reputation, its unique history, and the abundance of local jazz talent on its doorstep.
