The big decision Frank Lampard made at Chelsea that left Jamie Carragher eating his words

Jamie Carragher has admitted that he already been proven wrong by Chelsea boss Frank Lampard this season.

Lampard has deployed Tammy Abraham in the main striker role at Stamford Bridge and the youngster has repaid his faith with seven goals from his five league appearances.

Carragher was expecting Olivier Giroud to be leading the attack with Abraham as a back-up but the 21-year-old hit a superb hat-trick in their 5-3 win over Wolves to continue his impressive start to the season.

The Sky Sports pundit explained: "I was still of the opinion that Giroud should be the first-choice striker and Abraham should play a bit-part role.

"It's actually been flipped and this shows Frank Lampard knows more about Chelsea's young players than I do.

"He was absolutely fantastic, not just in that game but throughout this season."

Chelsea have been unable to sign players due to their two-window transfer ban from FIFA and Carragher has been impressed with the what the Blues legend has done so far.

Chelsea v Valencia: Frank Lampard press conference in full

"I do feel like Chelsea are different to Manchester United because they weren’t able to buy anyone.

"For Chelsea, speaking to fans, they’re just happy to see young players scoring.

"They’ve won everything already, they want to keep winning but this is something they’ve never had before.”

"There was a big banner at Stamford Bridge that read ‘we’ve got our club back’. They’re talking about the staff like Lampard, Jody Morris and Petr Cech,” Carragher added.

"Chelsea fans would maybe accept finishing outside the top six as long as they’re thinking they can push on with these young players."
