Frank Lampard has already made a crucial decision for the match against Lille on Tuesday night.
The head coach has probably made all of his decisions about his starting lineup by now, but those will not be made public until around an hour-and-a-half before kick-off at Stamford Bridge.
However, the Blues boss has made it clear he will not shy away from giving the young players the opportunity to put things right.
Lampard is facing the most difficult period in his tenure as head coach so far, with the Blues winning just twice in the last seven matches in all competitions.
They remain in the top four in the Premier League but the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham, who have had poor seasons by their standards, have closed the gap to five and six points respectively.
And Chelsea's Champions League hopes are hanging in the balance too, with only victory against French side Lille assuring them of a place in the last 16.
Lampard has won plaudits for giving youth a chance at Stamford Bridge, with the likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori shining so far this season.
But as a tricky spell hits, do they have what it takes to steer the side through it and into calmer waters, or would more experienced heads be better?
Lampard has no doubts.
"They’re crucial for the players [these big nights] because I think you can be defined as an individual and as a group by success and what success looks like.
"And this means going into the next stage of the Champions League, which is a place we want to be in and a platform for the players to play.
"I used to love big nights as a player and they are the ones that stick in your mind. So it’s opportunities now for the team, particularly the young players, to make a mark.
"I think it’s good, I like the pressure of this game being a knockout and we are all talking about it. If we’re going to do anything good here then we are going to need lots of these nights."
