The big boost that Steve Bruce hopes for this week with Allan Saint-Maximin edging closer to return

Steve Bruce is hoping that Allan Saint-Maxmin gets through a week of training and is back in contention to play against Wolverhampton Wanderers next weekend.

The Magpies boss is also confident that Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles and Paul Dummett can also be candidates to return to his squad for the tough clash against Wolves.

Bruce dusted himself down after a nervous 1-1 draw with Rochdale, but at least watched Matt Ritchie get through 26 minutes at Spotland.

Now he hopes that it can be a significant week at the club's Benton HQ.

Bruce told Chronicle Live: "Saint-Maximin, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie and Lascelles all could be in contention at Wolves.

"What a good five that would be to welcome back!"

Unfortunately, the draw against Dale resulted in two fresh injuries for Newcastle though, as both Yoshinori Muto and Miguel Almiron limped off before the end.

Bruce had already been forced to pull out Dwight Gayle (hamstring) and Andy Carroll (hip) for the cup tie.

After the game he said: "Both injured - both not right - one with a groin issue and the other with a bit of a hamstring problem.  Difficult."

But on a day when his side created 18 goal attempts in 90 minutes, Bruce knows he is likely to need offensive reinforcements.

He added: "Our frailties were there to see.

"You cannot dominate the game like we did and not make it count."
