‘The Bible doesn’t say that!’: Netanyahu angers Christians with lie that the Bible orders you to support Israel

Listen up Christians, you’d better support Israel’s genocide or else you’re going to hell. That’s the stark message from Benjamin Netanyahu, who yesterday attempted to use the Bible to order Christians to support him on the basis that this is what God demands of you.

Standing alongside Donald Trump, he said:

“[The Bible] says those who bless you will be blessed and those who will curse you will be cursed. And that’s actually what is happening. We want the blessings.”

This is a misquoting (and misappropriation) of Genesis 12:3, which reads:

“I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you.”

You would think that it’s obvious that the Bible isn’t referring to the State of Israel, which was established in 1948. But, apparently, Netanyahu wants Christians to believe that millennia when God was talking to Abraham, he was in effect ordering contemporary Christians to not only tolerate the mass murder of innocent civilians in Gaza but celebrate it, along with a warning that anyone who speaks out against this nightmare will be “cursed”.

As you might expect, many Christians are furious about Netanyahu twisting God’s words to support his mass murder. Perhaps noting Galations 1:6-9, which condemns those who distort God’s word and curse anyone who alters the true message: “I’m sorry my fellow Christian brothers and sisters, I truly believe satan found the perfect place to hide — In Israel.”

Another points out: “Genesis 12:3 was God’s covenant with Abraham, not a foreign policy pledge. The blessing was fulfilled in Christ (Galatians 3:16), not in propping up a foreign government. … Stop twisting the Bible into sick politics.”

It’s in Revelations, people!

However, it’s fair to say that many evangelicals are totally in agreement with Netanyahu that it’s their godly duty to support Israel. This line of thinking ties the rapture directly to Israel’s current political status, culminating in a climactic Battle of Armageddon in which Christ will return to lead the IDF in triumph over Israel’s enemies and establish a thousand-year kingdom.

Having said all that, even a cursory knowledge of Christ’s teachings should indicate he probably wouldn’t be cool with the mass slaughter of innocent men, women, and children. If Christ were born today in Bethlehem, he would be a Palestinian citizen. If he were a Christian living in Gaza today, his church would be obliterated by Israeli bombs and his disciples shot by drones.

So it’s a bit rich for Netanyahu to promise divine retribution for not supporting his genocide. After all, if there is a hell, he’s booked his one-way ticket there long ago.
