The best whisky in the world according to a top spirits comp has just been announced and it's not a single malt

A top spirits competition has just announced what it believes to be the best whisky in the world for 2020 - and despite the surging popularity of single malts the winner was actually a blend.

The International Whisky Competition, which has been running since 2010, has declared the Dewar's Double Double 32 Year Old its Whisky of the Year.

Created by current master blender, Stephanie Macleod, who also won Master Blender of the Year, the blended whisky was awarded the highest score across all of its many categories.

Produced using an innovative four stage aging process for "extra smoothness", the Double Double range is aged, blended together, aged again, then finished in sherry casks.

The 32 Year Old scored an impressive 96.4 points - the highest in the competition.

Much like the Olympic Games the judging panel award a trio of medals - gold, silver and bronze - to whiskies from around the world across nearly 50 categories, meaning there are nearly 150 medals given out each year.

Due to the coronavirus panademic, this year's IWC relocated from its usual home in Las Vegas to Colorado for the safety of the judges and staff.

Other winners included Dr Bill Lumsden of Glenmorangie, who won Master Distiller of the Year, and Ardbeg, which won Distillery of the Year.

In the Scottish categories, Ardbeg took home all three of the single malt medals for their Corryvreckan (96.1 pts), Blaaack Committee Edition (94.23 pts) and Blaaack (94.20 pts) editions.
