The best universities in Scotland ranked according to students

New rankings have revealed the best universities to go to across Scotland, according to the students.

Put together by the university comparison website, Uni Compare, the list shows the top 100 unis from across the whole of the UK.

The research included every university from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with the top one hundred voted for by Uni Compare users.

And in Scotland, it seems the capital came out on top, with the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Napier University coming in first and third in the list, while the University of Aberdeen came second.

The reviewers rated each university against a number of categories: accommodation, course quality, graduate careers, and student social life — the study also asks students if they would recommend their university to a friend.

Surprisingly, although University of Edinburgh came first in Scotland it came 36th overall, with Loughborough University being named as the top UK university.

With a rating of 4.14/5, Edinburgh Uni was lauded for its accommodation, wide range of courses and Union.

One student, who scored it highly, wrote: "The staff and RAs were super friendly and welcoming. The library is big and gives it of space for studying, whether is personal or group study.

"City life is amazing. I like how I'm not restrained to a campus as it means you can explore the city more and feel more a part of a city, like a local."

While another added: "The people and staff were lovely and I made so many close friends."

The University of Aberdeen, the fifth oldest university in the UK, appealed for its "fun and engaging" lectures, as well as its excellent accommodation.

A student at the university wrote: "My lecturers were very personable and clearly cared about their students. I never had a bad experience with my lecturers as they took the extra time to help me and never turned away.

"The whole course was so interesting because of how enthusiastic my lecturers were. I loved the Aberdeen city life because there was so much to do, but it still wasn't a huge city to get lost in."

Also representing the capital, was Edinburgh Napier, which came third and scored high for student satisfaction, its innovative courses and the city itself.

A reviewer wrote: "My campus (Craiglockhart) is very modern and a great environment to learn. You really feel part of the future when studying there."

While another added: "Edinburgh is a fantastic city for students to live in as it is full of every amenity you could ever need. Amazing libraries, museums, restaurants, cafés, nightlife, the list goes on!"

Other Scottish Universities which scored highly included the University of Glasgow (4th and 50th overall), Herriot-Watt (5th and 52nd overall) and the University of Strathclyde (6th and 53rd overall).

Speaking about this year’s rankings, Owen O’Neill, founder of Uni Compare, said: “It is an exciting time for students as they prepare to embark on a new year in a new city, and these rankings act as a way to guide students in what is a difficult decision.

"After completing their A-levels, they will likely have several offers, with every university offering something unique; it is essential to consider all the different factors.

“Ultimately, students will prioritise different things when going to university, but I would recommend taking your time and choosing the right pathway for you.”
