The best TV packages for the 2021/22 football season

The summer's European Championships drew to a close last night but football fans don't have to wait long to get their fix again.

Sky Bet Championship matches get underway with Bournemouth versus West Brom on Friday, August 6, while action from the Premier League gets underway a week later, with Brentford and Arsenal on Friday, August 13.

After a season and a half of empty stadiums and reduced capacities, it is hoped that the upcoming season can take place without disruption.

Details in the recent government announcement surrounding the proposed 'Freedom Day' on July 19 came as music to the ears of football supporters up and down the country.

What it does do, however, is bring an end to a period where all top-flight games have been televised.

The coronavirus pandemic placed a temporary pause to the half-century-long '3pm blackout' and even saw a handful of games shown on free-to-air terrestrial TV for the first time since 1992.

The 2021-22 Premier League season sees the resumption of television's "natural order" with 128 matches on Sky Sports, 52 matches on BT Sport, and 20 matches on Amazon Prime Video.

Contracts first signed in 2019 were extended in May in order to "generate stability and promote confidence within the football pyramid," in the words of Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.

If you're looking to sign up to watch Premier League football ahead of the new season, these are the best places to start:

Fans looking to catch as much of the action as possible will ideally want access to both - and options to add either BT Sport to Sky or vice-versa are available on their respective websites.

One 'hack' worth remembering for Amazon is that Prime subscriptions come with a free 30-day trial.

So, provided you remember to start and stop in time, you can technically watch all of their coverage throughout December free of charge.
