The best state schools in Bristol according to GCSE results

Figures have been released showing how well Bristol's state school pupils performed in their GCSE exams.

Rankings tables have been drawn up by the Reach Data Unit based on Attainment 8 and Progress 8 scores.

Redland Green School came top of the pile according to both measures, with average scores of 60.8 points and 0.54 points respectively.

Across all state schools in England, the average for Attainment 8 was 46.7, while the Bristol average was 44.6.

Redland Green head teacher Louise Blundell said: "I am so proud of each and every student and their achievements during this examination period.

"They worked extremely hard and were well supported by exceptional staff throughout their time at Redland Green School.

"We are delighted so many students gained the grades needed for their first-choice Post 16 studies, including a record number of students who have joined us at North Bristol Post-16 Centre."

Attainment 8 is an average score across eight subjects taken at GCSE - and the higher the number, the better.

In second place, behind Redland Green, was St Bede's Catholic College with an average Attainment 8 score of 57.4.

Third place has gone to Colston's Girls' School, where pupils scored 56.6 on average.

Redland Green also topped the rankings for Progress 8, a measure which focuses on pupils’ progress between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4.

A score of 1 means pupils made, on average, a grade more in progress than the national average.

The data released by the Department for Education (DfE) also reveals the proportion of students at each school who got strong passes of 5 or above in the 1-9 grading system for English and maths.

In 2019, Redland Green School saw 73.6 per cent of pupils get strong passes in both subjects, compared with 43.2 per cent across the rest of the country.
