The best pictures from Saturday at Bristol Harbour Festival 2019

The sun has shone brightly on day one of Bristol Harbour Festival 2019, despite a fairly ominous weather forecast in the build-up to it.

Attracting around 100,000 people to the city with heaps to see and do for all ages, the annual extravaganza is without doubt one of the best weekends in Bristol.

As ever, there is a jam-packed programme this year with heaps to get stuck into across the main stages, including circus performances in Queen Square, live music in the Amphitheatre and dances in Millennium Square.

Add to that the hilarious and high-octane entertainment on the water, delicious street food and market stalls aplenty, and you soon realise just why Harbour Festival attracts people from far and wide.

Check out our pictures from day one of Bristol Harbour Festival 2019 in the gallery below:

One of the main highlights for the thousands of attendees today was the ever-popular Baby Racing, which took place at several times throughout the day in Queen Square.

As the name suggests, the amusing event puts little'uns up against each other in a battle of speed as their parents cheer on from the sidelines. The winners earn an engraved trophy and plenty of kudos for their efforts.

Queen Square also played host to some jaw-dropping circus stunts today, performed by the talented Cirque Bijou team. Huge crowds watched on as juggling, swinging trapeze and more took place in front of their bewildered eyes.

Another big crowd-puller was the ever-popular Cardboard Boat Race, which saw people race against other teams in their makeshift boats - many of which didn't quite have the required durability to stay above the water.

Also on the water, the Young Shipwright's Boat Race was another highlight, with hundreds of children exploring the long tradition of boat building before creating their own models to race.

In terms of live music, crowds were treated to a wide range of genres today with the likes of the Frampton Shantymen and the Gentle Hooligans on the Brunel Stage; The Harrisons and Barnacle Buoys on the Centre Stage and Matuki on the Bristol Music Stage in the Amphitheatre.

Our photographer Michael Lloyd was on hand to get some fantastic pictures from day one of this year's Harbour Festival.
