The best of late night: Will Smith gets jiggy and Jimmy Fallon has a hangover

Will Smith got jiggy with it on Letterman

Sorry Ellen, dancing entrances are out. The Fresh Prince himself appeared on Letterman on Wednesday and originated the rap entry, treating studio audiences to most of Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It. Looking sharp and sounding great, Smith added some fuel to the rumour that he’s considering a musical comeback. (Smith has reportedly been spending time in the studio with Kanye.) Or was it all just to one-up his own kids? If so, well played. Will has one thing 14-year-old Willow and 16-year-old Jaden can’t yet harness: nostalgia.

Jimmy Fallon was hungover from SNL’s 40th birthday

Saturday Night Live celebrated its 40th anniversary this week, and Fallon seems to have celebrated harder than anyone else. On The Tonight Show the day after the SNL broadcast, Jimmy seemed to be hurting (do we detect a touch of the cig voice?) but happy. In this clip he launches into a series of epic anecdotes about the show and afterparty in classic Fallon style: it’s name-droppy, it’s meandering, it’s so excited to be there. Jimmy is basically the guy at karaoke who’s completely hogging the mic and you can’t even hold it against him, because he loves it more than everyone else. Plus, wouldn’t you just kill to see Paul McCartney do Shake It Off with Dan Aykroyd and Taylor Swift?

Jimmy Kimmel honeymooned with Benedict Cumberbatch

The handsome newlywed reported to the Jimmy Kimmel Live desk literally two days after his wedding to British theatre director Sophie Hunter. Kimmel seemed surprised the Sherlock babe made it down to the taping – “I’m on my honeymoon” is likely a better excuse than their producers usually hear – and decided to bring some festive spirit to the interview with some gross (virgin) piña coladas, a tropical backdrop and some helpful homewares. He also congratulated BC on his “cumberbun in the oven”, suggesting a first name starting with Q. Q-Cumberbatch. Say it out loud. He’s on to something.

Kelly Ripa ripped up the dancefloor on Dance Party USA

The 80s were an intense time for everyone, perhaps none more than Kelly Ripa. During her visit to the Kimmel studios, Jimmy aired some old footage from her time as a young Philadelphian and tween regular on Dancin’ On Air, a precursor to Dance Party USA. In the clips, Ripa (“this was before my Invisalign”) rocks some hard 80s fashion (“am I wearing socks with pumps?”), offers some early feminist dating tips (“men and women should both pay the bill sometimes”) and just really dances her Pennsylvanian heart out. By the way, that isn’t a perm. Girl did that to herself.

Ashton Kutcher always has a huge prosthetic penis on hand

Middle-aged teen Ashton Kutcher was on Conan this week with his Two and a Half Men co-star Jon Cryer, who dropped a very Two and a Half Men-style anecdote about Kutcher’s first day on set. Those lucky enough to never have seen the show won’t know this, but Kutcher is naked on screen a lot. Well, it is implied that he is naked a lot.

As a network television show filmed before a live studio audience, they can’t very well have Kutcher stripping down for real. So how to cover his modesty while bringing the humorous idea of a man’s penis to joke-hungry audiences? “Oh, I’ve got a huge prosthetic penis in my trailer,” Kutcher offered. Apparently modelled after his own genitalia for a sketch during Punk’d days, Kutcher had held on to it for just such a penile emergency. Sometimes you just know when you’re going to need something again later.
