MAC makeup artist Terry Barber's top beauty tips for traveling

Packing that plastic toiletries bag is a talent.

Do it at home before you fly and slot in everything like a game of Tetris. Decant skincare into small bottles (Muji has endless options) and curate your make-up. The best looks often come from a small, edited selection as you need to be more artful. Master make-up mixology: dot concealer into moisturiser for a modern, all-over base and create a rosy blush by blending lipstick with a balm. Pick items that double up, too. A warmed kohl can create a smoky eye and a good bronzer can contour, brighten and act as an eye shadow.

Flying make-up free isn’t for everyone, but try to get in the habit of a quick removal on take-off and a speedy ‘landing face’ so your skin can breathe. You’ll reap the rewards. Once in the sky apply a sheet mask to de-puff and hydrate. Stay strong and be immune to any filthy looks, keeping those elbows tucked in to avoid annoying your neighbours.

‘Thirty minutes to landing’ is your cue to add some colour to your face. Rub a little lipstick on to your cheeks or apply a lip stain. Avoid eye shadow and powder, which hold on to dehydrated skin like grim death, and always apply mascara, a magic tool for masking swollen eyes. This should just about return you to the land of the living — at least until your hotel shower.
