The best-loved running routes in the North East according to Strava

It's peak pavement pounding season with the Great North Run under a month away.

Thousands will be hitting the paths to clock up miles ahead of the famous half-marathon from Newcastle to South Shields on Sunday, September 8.

There is little surprise that one of the North East's most popular running routes follows a similar course to the Great North Run itself.

Exercise app Strava record heat maps which show where people are running around the world.

From them, we are able to tell which roads, routes and paths runners like the most.

The routes in red are where runners have mapped the most trips.

It appears that we love a run by the water in our part of the world. Which, with flat routes, calming breezes and plenty space away from traffic it's hardly surprising.

As Strava's heat maps show, routes along the Tyne and in the Town Moor are popular - the latter is the venue for Newcastle's free weekly Park Run.

To the east, routes which follow coastal paths are clearly a big hit.

The road parallel to Tynemouth Longsands, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay's beach is among the most hot-footed routes in the North East.

Coastal paths in Northumberland and North Tyneside also prove popular with runners (Strava)

The trend continues in Sunderland, with joggers clocking up miles around the beaches and close to the Wear.
